In-Play Betting Explained: How Live Betting Works

In-play betting lets you bet while an event is under way, with prices that change from moment to moment. Here is how live odds work and how to keep your betting under control at that pace.

How in-play odds move

Before an event starts, prices reflect the bookmaker's view of the whole contest. Once it's under way, every goal, card, break of serve or injury changes that view, and the odds move with it.

Two things drive most of the movement:

  • The score. A goal in football or a break of serve in tennis changes the likely outcome straight away.
  • The clock. As time runs down, a team that's ahead becomes more likely to hold on, so its price shortens even if nothing else happens.

That's why the same bet can be priced very differently at kick-off and twenty minutes later.

  • Football: match result, next goal, total goals, both teams to score, corners and cards.
  • Tennis: match winner, set betting, next game and total games.
  • Cricket: match result, runs in the next over and top batter.
  • Horse racing: some bookmakers offer in-running prices during a race, though markets move very fast.

Our guide to football betting explains the main football markets in more detail.

Bet delays and suspended markets

Live bets are often accepted after a short delay of a few seconds. If something significant happens during that delay, such as a goal, the bet can be rejected or offered again at a new price.

Markets are also suspended briefly after big moments, like goals, penalties, red cards or a VAR review, while prices are recalculated. If you try to bet during a suspension, the bet won't go through until the market reopens.

Cash out

Cash out lets you settle a bet before the event has finished, for less than the full potential return if it's winning, or to get part of your stake back if it's losing.

  • The cash out value is based on the current price of your selections, and it includes the bookmaker's margin, so it is normally a little below the bet's fair value at that moment.
  • Partial cash out lets you take some of the value now and leave the rest running.
  • Cash out isn't available on every market, and bets placed with free bets or under some promotions are often excluded.

Cash out is a tool, not a bonus: using it doesn't change the odds you took, it simply lets you close the bet early at the bookmaker's current price.

Setting limits when betting live

In-play betting is fast. Markets reopen within seconds of a goal, and it's easy to place more bets in an evening than you meant to. A few habits help:

  • Set a deposit limit before you start. Every UK-licensed bookmaker offers daily, weekly and monthly limits; our guide to deposit limits shows how they work.
  • Use reality checks, which remind you how long you've been playing.
  • Decide on a stake for the event in advance, and don't increase it to win back earlier losses.

Frequently asked questions

Why was my in-play bet rejected?

Live bets are often accepted after a short delay. If something important happens during that delay, such as a goal, the bookmaker can reject the bet or offer a new price.

Is cash out worth using?

Cash out lets you close a bet early at the bookmaker's current price, which includes its margin. It can lock in part of a return, but you give up the rest of the potential winnings.

Can I bet in-play on horse racing?

Some bookmakers offer in-running prices during a race, but the markets move very quickly and availability varies.
