Casino Bonuses Explained: How Welcome Offers Really Work

A casino welcome offer is a deal with conditions attached, and the headline number tells you only part of the story. This guide explains how each type of bonus works and how to compare them.

What a casino bonus is

A casino bonus is extra value an operator gives you for signing up or depositing, usually as bonus funds or spins on a particular slot. Bonus funds aren't the same as cash. Before you can withdraw anything won with them, you normally have to meet conditions such as wagering, time limits and caps on what can be converted into cash.

Your own deposited money stays yours. You can withdraw it at any time, although under some offers a withdrawal request cancels an active bonus, so read that part of the terms before you ask for a payout.

Deposit match bonuses

A deposit match adds a percentage of your deposit as bonus funds, up to a limit. At SaviBet, LuckCity and BetBlink, for example, new players get a 25% match up to £50 plus 20 free spins on Book of Dead.

Here's how a deposit match plays out:

Deposit £40 Deposit £200
Bonus at 25% £10 £50 (the maximum)
Wagering at 10x the bonus £100 £500
Most that can be converted to cash (1x the bonus) £10 £50

Depositing more than the amount needed to reach the cap adds nothing to the bonus, so there's no reason to deposit beyond what you planned to spend anyway.

Free spins and bonus spins

Spins offers give you a set number of spins on a named slot at a fixed value per spin. Two things decide what they're worth:

  • The spin value. 50 spins at 10p each is £5 of spins.
  • What happens to the winnings. Some offers pay spin winnings as bonus funds with wagering; others pay them as cash or with light wagering, often with a maximum cashout.

At BetFusion and PlayWins, new players can get 50 Bonus Spins on Big Bass Splash, worth 10p each, with winnings wagered just 1x and a maximum cashout of £100. The spins have to be used within 24 hours of being credited. Our free spins page compares all current spins offers.

Wagering requirements and the 10x cap

Wagering tells you how many times you must play through bonus funds before they turn into cash. A £20 bonus with 10x wagering means you need to place £200 of bets with it.

Since 19 January 2026, UK Gambling Commission rules cap wagering at 10 times the bonus. Promotions that require play across different products, such as betting on sport to unlock casino spins, are banned too. Our article on the new UK bonus rules explains both changes, and wagering requirements explained works through examples.

Game contribution, caps and expiry

  • Game contribution. Slots usually count 100% towards wagering, while table and live games may count a smaller percentage or nothing at all. If roulette counts 10%, every £10 you stake on it clears only £1 of wagering.
  • Maximum conversion. Many offers cap the amount of bonus winnings you can turn into cash, for example 1x the bonus amount.
  • Maximum bet. Some bonuses limit the size of each bet while bonus funds are active.
  • Expiry. Bonuses and spins have deadlines: 30 days to complete wagering, or 24 hours to use spins, for example.
  • Payment exclusions. Deposits made with some e-wallets, such as Skrill and Neteller, often don't qualify.

How to compare two offers

Put the offers side by side and look past the headline:

25% up to £50 plus 20 free spins 50 Bonus Spins on Big Bass Splash
Where SaviBet, LuckCity, BetBlink BetFusion, PlayWins
What you need to do Deposit £10 or more Deposit £10 with the promo code, then wager £10 on eligible slots within 7 days
Wagering 10x the bonus; free spin winnings 10x 1x on spin winnings
Cap 1x the bonus amount, or £20 from free spins £100 from spin winnings
Time limit 30 days to wager; 7 days for free spin winnings 24 hours to use the spins

Neither is "better" in every case. A larger deposit gets more from the match, while spins with light wagering are simpler to complete. Use our wagering calculator to see how much play each one involves.

Safer gambling

A bonus doesn't change the odds of the games you play with it, and wagering means you'll spend more time playing than you might have planned. Decide what you're prepared to spend before you claim an offer, and set a deposit limit when you open the account. Our deposit limits guide shows how.

Keep it fun

Set a budget before you play, never chase losses and take regular breaks. Gambling should never be a way to make money. Free, confidential help is available from GamCare or the National Gambling Helpline on 0808 8020 133.
